Fergie Fury at Op Blow for Scholes

SIR ALEX FERGUSON launched an attack on England after the angry United manager confirmed Paul Scholes needs a hernia operation.

After his match-winning display at Newcastle on Saturday, Scholes was restricted to a substitutes' role in the scrappy 1-0 win over Wolves last night that put United into second place on goal difference behind Arsenal.

The midfielder came on midway through the second half as Ferguson's side ensured their third successive win.

But now Scholes must have surgery to solve a problem which worsened during his time with England for last week's friendly win over Croatia.

Ferguson said: "Paul has been carrying a hernia problem for quite a bit. We told the England people about it but when he came back he was in a real state. It is really painful and at the moment it is not possible for him to play two games in a week.

"He will need an operation but we will have to pick our moment."

The smart money would be on that moment coming next week before England's vital Euro 2004 qualifying encounter in Macedonia. …
