Porsche is celebrating 40 years of the 911 sports model with a special edition based on the Carrera.

Unlike so many so-called special editions, this one is a genuinely more desirable version of a car that is already among the most desirable of all.

There are some subtle styling enhancements, revisions to the ride and handling, and even more power to the rear wheels from the glorious 3.6-litre six-pot engine.

The 911 was first seen at the Frankfurt motor show in 1963, when the Beatles were at their height.

This latest version will debut at this year's show in September and just 1,963 will be made for worldwide consumption.

All will be painted in a particular metallic silver shade that has been the exclusive preserve of the hugely-powerful 612bhp Carrera GT until now.

New styling features include front cooling wire openings from the 911 Turbo and side air intake grilles at the front.

There are sill trims, special 18-inch chrome-effect alloys and polished exhaust tailpipes. …
