Man City boss Kevin Keegan has defended his decision to sign Real Madrid reject Steve McManaman, writes Simon Stone.

Keegan swooped for the former England winger over the weekend after it became clear McManaman no longer had a long-term future in the Spanish capital.

Reaction to the 31-year-old's arrival has been mixed with some supporters fearing his best days are now behind him.

However, Keegan believes McManaman, his seventh signing since the end of last season, is still "world class" and is confident he will soon win over the sceptics.

"I still think Steve is world class and we will find out for sure over the next few months," said Keegan. "I do know he is hungry and has given up quite a lot to come here.

"We are talking about someone who has been playing for Real Madrid. If you are saying he has faded, you would have to say the same about Morientes and he is also world class.

"Real Madrid have a lot of quality in their team, so the fact he was given a shirt number and also got into the side for some key games last season tells me that the coach respected him. …
