Fallon Lucky to Escape a Ban

The inconsistency in stewarding was highlighted once more at York yesterday when Kieren Fallon escaped with a caution for careless riding on Sporting Gesture after winning the Patrington Haven Leisure Park Handicap.

Most onlookers felt sure he would be given a ban for his actions which, if in excess of two days, would have meant he would have missed next week's St Leger.

The stewards decided the interference was caused by careless riding, but in their wisdom they let the champion off with a caution.

However, the video evidence showed that Fallon had carried out a deliberate manoeuvre approaching the two-furlong marker to enable him to get into a challenging position.

In the process, his mount interfered with George Duffield's mount Aleron which caused a concertina effect involving two other horses on his outside, Sualda and Night Sight.

While I don't like to see any jockey being suspended, I have seen similar cases of interference resulting in enforced holidays and why the various panels interpret the rules differently remains a source of irritation. …
