Six members of the Northern Trailer Boat AC landed 22 common skate at Oban and lost another 12 on the surface.

The heaviest fish of 176lb was taken by Colin George, while Terry Moody caught one of 170lb.

Of their catch, taken from two boats, the smallest fish was 68lb and five of the fish had already been caught before and tagged.

One of the anglers, Davey Blythe, caught his first ever skate, which weighed 134lb.

The breaking string on nylon used was 80lb and the catch was made on whole mackerel.

The combined weight of the catch was 2,634lb and all were taken in four hours.

For the last few days, boat fishing has been brought to a halt by rough seas.

The Hartlepool Charter Boat Skippers Association competition was won by Durham septuagenarian Alan Collins. His ling of 28lb 8oz won him pounds 1,000 as it was the biggest fish taken from the charter boats.

An open shore angling competition, Harry Whorley Memorial, is being held on Sunday, October 26, organised by the Horden Coast Road Cod Bashers. For the heaviest single fish there is a guaranteed pounds 500 prize.

The boundaries are Noses Point, Seaham Last Beach to Cannons Headland, Hartlepool. Registration from 7.30-9am at Horden Labour Club. Entry fee is pounds 8 for adults, pounds 5 juniors. Contact 0191 5180742 or 01429 273145 between 9am-4pm.

Seaton Sluice SAC held a club competition at Port Carlisle, which attracted eight rods, all weighing in a total of 118 flounders for 115lb 7oz.

Chris Guthrie won with 37 fish for 33lb 2oz, second was Barry Tweddle (18 fish, 19lb 12oz) and third was Frank Simpson (17 fish, 17lb). The bait used was a cocktail of crab and mackerel strip.

Derek Brownson won Cleadon SAC's club competition with three eels and one cod weighing 4lb 4oz from the Mill Dam. …
