Professor Ivor Crewe may have been stating a simple fact yesterday when he detailed just how little it could cost each week to pay off a student loan.

But such is the volatile political situation surrounding this issue that the comments by the man who is President of Universities UK, which represents vice-chancellors, were certain to raise the temperature even further.

The evidence is there for all to see.

The fact is that the loan system means young people will be starting their working lives with large debts - and it still depends on the graduate involved being fortunate enough to find themselves in a well-paid job from day one.

It might actually work in more prosperous regions of the country - but it is patently not an attractive proposition to people in the North-East.

It has to be acknowledged that the rates at which the cash has to be paid back are very low but that has to be balanced against the prospect of young people seeing themselves saddled with debts of between pounds 10,000 and pounds 15,000. …
