Balcony Display Is Great Project

Article excerpt

Margaret Stoker's time and dedication have created this beautiful balcony garden.

Her gorgeous flowers have just scooped first prize in the city council's Byker Bloom 2003 competition and she's chuffed to pieces.

"It was lovely to hear I'd won," she says. "I spend so much time on my flowers - every day I'm out there making sure they are in good condition."

Margaret, 51, has lived in her flat at the top of the Byker Wall with her husband Jeffery for 28 years.

"My husband's always been a keen gardener so that's where I get it from. But the balcony is my project, I've done it all on my own.

"I love sitting out on the balcony and looking at the different colours. I've had a clematis for the first time this year and it really has been my pride and joy."

Margaret says she finds gardening relaxing and she loves it when other people can share her pleasure. …
