Boat Builder Ovington on the Crest of a Wave

A world class boat builder from Tyneside is set for rapid expansion after winning pounds 1m worth of business from a south coast company.

Ovington Marine, based in North Shields, is close to completing the deal which will increase its turnover by almost 50pc.

The company, best known in the North-East for its 49er boat which triumphed at the Sydney Olympics, is also expanding into producing larger boats - including input into the design of a round the world yacht for the high profile Volvo Ocean Race.

And company founder Dave Ovington is to build another model, a mini-transat, aimed at competing in a single-handed trans-Atlantic race.

The plans will involve expanding beyond the company's existing two sites, on Mariners Lane in Tynemouth and Tanners Bank in North Shields, to hopefully bring Ovington operations on to one site and allow room for at least six more workers.
