New Marske went to the top of the Wearside League table in a frantic day at the summit.

While early leaders Stokesley were squeezed out in a nine goal thriller against reigning champs Birtley Town, New Marske rattled off a routine 3-1 win away at league whipping boys Washington Nissan UK to nudge a point clear.

Stokesley fought a fast and furious game at home to the champs and found themselves 5-3 down at the break.

Visiting striker Michael McKay struck four times and Michael Ford added another with Stokesley getting a brace from Craig Johnson and Jonathon Newton also on target.

Stokesley - who went into the game on the back of six straight wins - had the best of the second half and pulled one back through Nathan Haslam, but despite pressure could not find a leveller.

New Marske took full advantage of Stokesley's slip with their trip to the rock-bottom new boys who are yet to win and who have now leaked 43 goals in nine games. …
