Kenyon's Switch 'Surprised' Becks

DAVID BECKHAM today admitted he was taken aback after hearing about the departure of Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon to Chelsea.

The England captain, whose move to Real Madrid was in part negotiated by Kenyon, said: "I was very surprised, he was an influential man there."

When asked about Kenyon's involvement in the [pounds sterling]25million transfer, Beckham said: "Not much. It was between me and Real Madrid but I am sure he (Kenyon) discussed it with Mr Perez (the Madrid president).

At this point, Football Association director of communications and marketing Paul Barber instructed journalists to keep their questions to England matters.

Beckham confirmed he will lead his country against Liechtenstein tomorrow night, despite the threat of a suspension hanging over him.

Beckham will miss the final Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey on 11 October if he is booked at Old Trafford, after receiving a yellow card against Macedonia at the weekend.

He said: "Obviously there will be challenges I have to hold back on and certain situations I usually get into. Three or four players are on yellow cards. It was put to me (the idea of missing tomorrow's game) but I'd rather play."

Beckham will make his first appearance at Old Trafford since his move from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

He added: "I'll probably be emotional but it will be nice to play back at Old Trafford so quickly after the move."

The former United star hopes he will receive a warm welcome. "I'd like to think so, I had so many great years there, so many great friends back there," he said.

"I'd like to think the reaction will be good."

Beckham admitted he was excited about the thought of going back to the ground where, in addition to his many exploits for United, he gave one of his finest international appearances in a World Cup qualifier against Greece. …
