Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor those who fell in battle to serve our country.

David Gadd is a veteran of 30 years in the U.S. Navy and Fleet Reserve. He's also post commander of American Legion Post 137 on San Juan Avenue.

Q: How is the American Legion doing these days?

A: I'd say that this post is doing real good. We've got 1,591 people. That's No. 1 in the Fifth District and No. 4 in the state of Florida, I believe.

Q: How are you spending Memorial Day?

A: We're going to have a big swimming party, family party, a live band. It'll be like an all-day meeting and dinner on the ground, if you know what I mean.

I'm going to try to get a bugler play Taps for us at 12 o'clock. We'll fly the U.S. flag at half-mast until noon. …
