THE psychic world is amorphous, covering everything from clairvoyancy to witchcraft to astrology, and shading into psychiatry and psychology at its more sober fringes. It is also a completely unregulated world, where a charlatan can set up in business as easily as an honest practitioner.

A spokeswoman for the College of Psychic Studies (020 7589 3292), which was founded in Fulham in 1884, says: "There is no qualification or accreditation for psychics, and because the relationship between a client and a psychic is very personal, you can't really say that one is better than another."

Like the CPS, the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain (020 7235 3351), based in Belgrave Square, will recommend certain psychics to prospective clients, but a spokesman stressed that these recommendations were based on trust and long acquaintance rather than any league table of ability.

Adam Fonteras, who founded the British Astrological and Psychic Society (0906 4700827) in Rochester, Kent, in 1976, says that his non-commercial organisation has "a strict vetting procedure" for its 100 or so consultants, all of whom sign a code of ethics.

He also acknowledges that there are excellent spiritualists in the country who have not signed up to the society.

Arguably, the best way of selecting a psychic is to go on the personal recommendation of a friend or, failing that, of a celebrity.

The spiritual work of Hampshire-based Craig and Jane Hamilton-Parker - who claim their daughter and their dog are also psychic, and who can be contacted on 02380 696262 - was good enough for friends of the late Princess Diana, who watched the couple "contact" the dead princess on an American television programme earlier this year.
