DE Steven Harris was disappointed at the mistrial an Alachua County Circuit Court Judge declared late Friday night after a six-person jury could not reach a verdict on felony battery charges. But his disappointment had little to do with the verdict preventing him from finally playing in his first game.

"It's not just about that," Harris said. "My mom came all the way from Miami just for this and now she's going to have to come back. It's not just about football."

Several members of Harris' family made the trip from Miami, and they sat in Judge Larry Turner's third-floor courtroom from 9 a.m. until just before midnight, when Turner dismissed the jury after the foreman announced that they were deadlocked.

"That's a long time, so it's kind of frustrating not to have it resolved," Harris said. "I'm tired, but I'm not dejected. . . . They tried to prove the case which was, in my opinion, not successful."

The case is set for a pre-trial conference on Wednesday, with the second trial scheduled to begin Oct. 13.


K Matt Leach lost his perfect season yesterday in the second quarter. The sophomore entered the game having made all five of his field-goal attempts this season, but missed a 51-yard attempt early in the second quarter.

Leach had made a 46-yard field goal on the previous play, but an illegal formation penalty wiped out the kick. UF had only six men on the line of scrimmage. At least seven are required.

Leach's 51-yard attempt was a low line drive that was wide left.


There was no big early kickoff return by the opponent this week, just a string of big special-teams plays for the Gators.

After Florida A&M's Levy Brown intercepted Ingle Martin on the game's first offensive play, the Rattlers' opening drive stalled at the UF 28-yard line. …
