Foundation Helps Sick Kids, Families; Jay Fund's Calendars Help Sick Children, Their Families

Article excerpt

Byline: Rich Ray, Times-Union staff

The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation raises money for local children who suffer from leukemia and childhood cancers. Founded in 1996 in honor of Jay McGillis, a young man whom Coughlin coached at Boston College, the Jay Fund also supports clinical and laboratory research that will benefit ill children and their families.

In a fund-raising effort for the Jay Fund, award-winning photographer Susan Michal is creating the second annual "When I Grow Up" calendar. The 2004 calendar will feature upbeat and playful photos of both sick and healthy children dressed in attire in line with what they want to be when they grow up.

"The theme of Susan Michal's 'When I Grow Up' calendars is to share in a fun way that these children have hopes and dreams for their futures," said Jay Fund Executive Director Keli Coughlin. "Through the sales of these calendars, we hope to help in our mission to aid these local families who are suffering due to their child's illness."

Parents who want their children photographed for the 2004 calendar should call Susan Michal at 262-8892 as soon as possible, as the deadline for photographing children has been extended to Sept. 19. For more information about the Jay Fund, go to www.firstcoastcommunity .com, keyword: jayfund.
