Suwannee Swamped; Evangel Shows off Defense in 45-0 Win

LIVE OAK -- Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian forged its reputation as one of the nation's elite prep football programs with offense. It has placed a string of starting quarterbacks into the college ranks, including Miami's Brock Berlin, and its top scholarship-worthy seniors this year also play offense.

Nobody at Langford Stadium last night would have guessed it.

Evangel used a stifling defense to spark a 45-0 hammering of the host Bulldogs. Suwannee managed just 129 total yards, never found any sort of running game and was overwhelmed by the Eagles' defensive front.

"I think, yes, our defense can get overlooked sometimes," said Evangel coach Dennis Dunn. "But this year, our thought has been that we need our defense to carry us early until the offense can catch up. We didn't quite know what to expect from Suwannee, other than knowing they had a lot of athletes and tradition."

Suwannee running back Bernard Williams was bottled for only 7 yards on nine carries, and Bulldogs quarterback Logan Hall was forced into four of his team's six turnovers. This from a unit that features some of the area's top offensive talent. Suwannee scored 20 points against a tough Columbia defense last week.

Evangel (1-0) showed an effective, balanced offense under first-year starting quarterback Denny Duron.

"We just made way too many mistakes, and Evangel is obviously outstanding in every phase," said Suwannee coach Jay Walls. "We'll come back Monday and just put this behind and get ready for Madison."

Suwannee (0-2) committed five first-half turnovers, three by interception, and the favored Eagles posted all 28 of their first-half points off the miscues. Fullback Jacob Hester, who has committed to Texas, scored three short-yardage touchdowns for a 21-0 lead. …
