North East supremo Ron Harvey has lashed out at the area's boxers being snubbed internationally.

Harvey, secretary of the Tyne, Tees and Wear division, is so upset that he's taken the matter up with England's technical director Ian Irwin.

"I don't think we're getting a fair crack of the whip up here," said Harvey, "and I've told Ian so.

"We have terrific talent in the North East. Boxers capable of fighting at the very highest level given the opportunity.

"But we don't get the recognition we deserve. I can mention three fighters straight away who should be England regulars - Gary Barr at Birtley, South Durham's Bradley Saunders, and Trevor Crewe from Plains Farm - but they aren't being watched enough.

"Then there's Grainger Park's John Watson, who has fought for England but should be getting more recognition.

"And if Dave Pendleton decides what he's doing his division is wide open for advancement.

"I'm a great tub thumper on behalf of our area but I've been in boxing a long time and I can recognise quality when I see it. I hope that after my chat with Ian things will improve significantly."

The national boys club championships have hit a problem locally with the dates of the county and regional rounds being changed.

"The county round used to be on October 11 but it has now been put back to October 18 at Spennymoor," explained Harvey. "To make matters worse the regional round that follows has been brought forward from the first Saturday in November to October 25.

"That means there is only one week if any fighters have to box off which is extremely tight. And, apart from that, there is the problem of coaches who work with the lads to get their weights correct being messed around. It isn't the best of decisions."
