SHE helps manage more than [pounds sterling]2.7 billion of financial assets by day but, when she leaves the office, Kate Jones cuts through the pressures of her job with a relaxing session of yoga.

Miss Jones, who at 25 has already helped turn a high-profile [pounds sterling]10 million fund into [pounds sterling]60 million for her bosses, has been named Young Businesswoman of the Year.

The university graduate, who attended the awards ceremony in central London last night, said she was "thrilled and surprised".

A fund manager for M&G, the Prudential's UK and European investment arm, she said being a young woman in a cut-throat business meant she had to work harder than male colleagues to win respect.

"I feel I have to go the extra mile," she said. "I do appear very young, and I am conscious that people might think I am inexperienced - and I have found that difficult. It is extra pressure."

After leaving Birmingham University in 1999 with a 2-1 in economic mathematics, Miss Jones started on M&G's graduate scheme.

Her natural flair for figures meant that within two years she was given her own sets of funds to manage.

Now she is part of a team that manages more than [pounds sterling]2.7 billion of retail and UK pension fund assets, and spends part of her time pitching for new, high-profile clients and representing her employer overseas.

"There are a few sleepless nights, particularly before a deadline, but I am into alternative therapies - reiki and yoga. They keep you well grounded," said Miss Jones, who lives in Islington with her boyfriend, Jack, a musician.

"It has been a steep learning curve but I keep telling myself that, although I seem young, I do have the knowledge. I had my foot in the door even while I was at university, and I have worked hard for this. …
