I was so pleased to see the article in the Gazette (Our Stop Of Horrors, 10.9.03). I am a resident in Middlesbrough and I feel ashamed of the railway station whenever I need to use it.

I've looked at it and thought a coat of paint where it's needed and perhaps some flower tubs would help. That's no big deal financially, is it?

Why isn't our local authority doing something to help our public image? No wonder we get such a bad press.

Why aren't there any staff around in the quieter times? Passengers can feel vulnerable, especially if they're travelling alone.

I hope you pass on these thoughts to the people who can do something about it. At least we can live in hope.

If we want people to use trains, which would seem a sensible thing to do, we're going to have to make it a reasonably pleasant experience and Middlesbrough station is not that. …
