Elaine Crossley, 49, from Gateshead, said: "I take my children out of school for two weeks every year because it is the only time we can go away on holiday. I run a karaoke and so holidays are my busiest season. It is only when the schools are back that we have a chance to go away. The school understands and they work around it. I have taken my 15-year-old son out of school but because I was worried for his safety. He was being bullied and I felt the school and education welfare weren't helping."

Fiona Wilson from South Gosforth said: "My 16-year-old step-daughter and her friends have skipped school in the past but it wasn't over anything serious. When the rest of my children were at school we used to take them out of school to go to the theatre. Their headteacher was very understanding and actually felt it added to their education. …
