The business of buying a used car from a private seller can be frought with danger.

How do you know the car doesn't have a dodgy past?

How can you tell if it has been clocked?

How would you know if it's a bodged up banger that could put you and your family in harm's way?

An astonishing three million pre-owned vehicles change hands in private deals every year, and even though advice and warnings are easy to come by, unsuspecting motorists are still being conned by unscrupulous sellers and losing hundreds or even thousands of pounds into the bargain.

Tony Noakes, Head of RAC's Inspection Services, believes that in general motorists are heeding the warnings of other drivers who have bought used car nightmares.

He says drivers should take every precaution when thinking about buying a used car.

"The issue is not just one of getting your money's worth, but in making sure that the vehicle is safe to drive.

The car of your dreams may look immaculate on the outside but could hide a whole host of problems - problems that could potentially be life threatening," he adds.

Unless you're dealing with a reputable trader, buying a used car can be a minefield - but now some of Britain's leading independent motoring organizations have got together to launch a service which sets out to make buying or selling a used car a lot safer.

Called Used Car Checks, the new scheme provides the buyer or seller with the most comprehensive inspection package on the market, and the company which has launched it claims it is also cheaper than other inspection services which are most commonly available through the big motoring organisations. …
