Construction was approved and work is under way on the South Ortega Marketplace where Target Corp. will build a SuperTarget and developer Wallace Enterprises intends to develop more stores, all for a July opening.

Wallace Vice President Mark Johnson said Target bought about 20 acres of the 28.5-acre site at 6331 Roosevelt Blvd. and Wallace owns the remaining acreage. There also are four outparcels, and one will be developed with a Wendy's restaurant.

The city approved the construction permit this week for Target to build a 174,500-square-foot SuperTarget, which includes another 11,500 square feet of unenclosed space. A SuperTarget combines a regular Target discount store with a full-line grocery department.

Plans show the store will include groceries, a pharmacy, a garden center, an optical department, a photo department, electronics and general merchandise. Batson-Cook Co. is the contractor for the $5 million construction job.

Both Wallace and Target are based in Minneapolis.

Johnson said Wallace probably would start construction on its retail building about the first of the year. Termec Constructors of Mobile, Ala., is listed as the contractor for that building.

The permit application shows that Wallace's building, next to Target, could accommodate about 12 tenants and carries a construction cost of $1.32 million.

Wallace bought the 28.5-acre site, north of Jacksonville Naval Air Station, last year. Wallace resolved issues with the Navy over concerns about lighting levels at the proposed shopping center.

Target operates six traditional Targets in Northeast Florida and a SuperTarget in Orange Park.
