While value has always been my trademark, there are times when the situation demands a temporary change of direction, and that's how I feel about Frizzante in today's Tote Ayr Gold Cup.

James Fanshawe's filly is a worthy favourite and everything is in place for her to make her presence felt in Scotland's big sprint.

Prior to the Stewards' Cup, she had won both her starts in lower grade handicaps, but showed that bigger fish were well within her capabilities after running a cracker in finishing fourth to Patavellian at Goodwood.

Drawn low, she stayed on the stands' side and was well clear of her group and may have finished second, ahead of Fire Up The Band, had she been drawn high.

Frizzante is up 3lb for that but is a pound better off with the runner-up and I fancy she will have the measure of Fire Up The Band this time. Paul Blockley has two strings to his bow with Hidden Dragon and Hit's Only Money and the former makes most appeal after his victory in the Great St Wilfrid. His subsequent defeat at Epsom can be ignored as the five furlongs was far too sharp for him.

Quito commands plenty of respect following his fine fourth from a poor draw in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last week, while Grizedale is also short-list material.

It's not impossible for Funfair Wane to repeat last year's victory off the same mark. …
