Burglar Urges Martin to Settle

Farmer Tony Martin is expected to meet his lawyer today to discuss a settlement offer from the burglar he shot and wounded.

Brendan Fearon, 33, has offered to drop claims for compensation for the injuries he suffered if Mr Martin drops counter- claims for losses incurred when burglars broke into his home.

Fearon was also jailed for his part in the burglary.

Malcolm Starr, who led the campaign for Mr Martin's release from prison, said the farmer would need to discuss Mr Fearon's offer before making any decision.

Mr Fearon's lawyers have written to Mr Martin's solicitor suggesting that the legal action should end and any public money raised to cover Mr Martin's costs should be given to charity.

"I don't think that Mr Martin has had a chance to consider this although I would expect him to accept," said Mr Starr.

"Of course, it's possible he may turn around and say `no, Fearon started this action and I'm going to finish it'.

"But I don't think he will say that. …
