Housebound Mother Started Her Own Web Design Company

Self-taught web designer Joan Gray has transformed her life after setting up her own web design company Diva Web Design, with the help of Social Enterprise Sunderland (SES).

Ms Gray, who has been unable to leave her home in Silksworth, Sunderland for the past decade as she is agoraphobic, was inspired to learn about computers after she bought a PC for her children.

Starting with basic IT courses from home, she quickly uncovered a talent for design and enrolled on the Learning Library's web design course.

Keen to put her new found talents to good use, she was surfing the web, came across SES' website and a business was born.

She said: "Initially I enrolled on the course to occupy my days but couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it.

"Having access to the internet has opened up a whole new world to me and when I came across SES, a plan was hatched and I thought, why not give it a try."

Now she has turned her idea into a successful business, designing and managing websites for companies worldwide including hotels in the USA and a large jewellery company in London. …
