Suspected members of a cocaine cartel, which detectives claim was the biggest drug-smuggling gang to operate in the UK, remained in custody today.

The alleged Colombian-based network, thought to have been making at least pounds 100m a year by flooding Britain with drugs, was "dismantled" in a series of raids in both countries yesterday, police said. Twelve people - 10 men and two women - were arrested in London and more than 15 were held in Colombia.

EU 'fraud' row

EUROPEAN Commission president Romano Prodi was facing a grilling from Euro-MPs today over the latest fraud scandal at the European Commission. EU fraud staff and a Commission Task Force have been probing missing funds at the Eurostat office, checking claims that about pounds 650,000 has been siphoned off.

BANKING group Lloyds TSB was today fined pounds 1.9m and ordered to pay compensation of pounds 98m for the mis-selling of a high-risk precipice bond. The ruling by the Financial Services Authority relates to the sale of the Extra Income and Growth Plan, a product available through Scottish Widows. …
