Scrappy Game Ends with a Last-Minute Score

The Borders picked up their first win of the season in dramatic style last night at Netherdale.

A drop-goal by stand-off Clark Laidlaw in the 82nd minute gave the Borders a morale boosting win against a Cardiff side which threatened to steal it in the final minute.

Cardiff had taken the lead in the second minute with a try by Donavan Van Vuuren only for Kevin Utterson, the Borders captain, to bring his side level three minutes later with Gareth Morton's conversion giving them the lead.

It was a lead they held until the 81st minute when Nick Robinson's fourth penalty snatched it away and seemed to end the Borders hopes of a first win.

But with the 2,000 crowd on their feet, Colin Stewart won a loose ball and Laidlaw dropped the crucial goal.

It had been a scrappy game with defences on top and both sides relied on the boot to keep the points moving along.

After the early flurry of tries, Morton was on target with his first penalty in 16 minutes to which Robinson replied three minutes later. …
