Sir Bobby Robson was left cursing Jermaine Jenas' "moment of madness" after the England international handed Arsenal their winner in last night's thrilling encounter and left Newcastle still without a Premiership win this season.

United had twice hauled themselves level with the Gunners thanks to goals from Laurent Robert and Olivier Bernard, but were unable to hold on for a point as Jenas handled in the area as he leapt to clear a corner.

It is the second time this season the England midfielder has given away a penalty in the closing stages of a game, having tripped Tomasz Radzinski in the area at Everton a fortnight ago.

And Magpies' boss Robson could not hide his frustration at his young star's naivety.

He said: "That is the second time he has conceded a penalty in the closing stages. It cost us a win at Everton and it has cost us a deserved point here.

"It is a shame because he played really well out there, but I'm not happy with what he has done at the end of it. He's jumped early and then at the last minute stuck a hand out. It was a moment of madness. It was a silly penalty, he's 20 years old and he has to learn from it.

"He will do, because he knows the pain of having to come off, having done something like that in a game like this."

Robson, though, did point out that the penalty had come from a harsh decision against Titus Bramble, who had appeared to win the ball cleanly from Pascal Cygan. Robson added: "I've got no complaints about the decision to award a penalty, but I'm incensed at the fact the referee has awarded the free-kick from where it has come.

"Titus Bramble made a fantastic and clean tackle on Pascal Cygan, but the referee has blown for the foul, he buckled under the pressure from the home fans.

"I was so angry I've asked the Sky people to show it to me again and it is a perfect tackle. …
