A council says it makes perfect road sense to resurface a Teesside street - even though the houses along it are being pulled down.

Houses in Burnsville Road, Grangetown, are set for demolition as part of a huge clearance programme.

Yet even though it will eventually be a road to nowhere, a street resurfacing team has moved in to give it a new pounds 3,900 top layer.

Residents in the older Grangetown area could be forgiven for wondering what is going on, so the council has moved to explain its actions.

According to Cabinet member for housing and neighbourhood renewal, Cllr Chris Abbott, it is so the road can cope with demolition traffic.

He said: "It is important for residents to understand the logic behind the resurfacing of Burnsville Road.

"We believe it is one of those public highways that will need to remain open for the foreseeable future because it is a route for utility services, providing services beyond the clearance area. …
