Geoff Sidgewick, from Middlesbrough, said: "I'm delighted with the win, though it was touch and go for a while that we would hang on.

"For me, McClaren's got his priorities right. We've tightened up at the back and are suddenly hard to beat.

"The good football will follow once we get our confidence.

"This way we're grinding out results and we're not pretty to watch, but the end justifies the means. Southampton were flying before this game, but we made them look ordinary."

ANDY CARTER, from Portsmouth, said: "Apart from TV games, that's the first time I've seen Boro this season.

"I thought we showed a lot of spirit and it's a massive three points for us, especially with Chelsea and Newcastle to come at home.

"Three wins inside a week will do wonders for confidence and, more importantly, has turned our season around.
