Great north poetry COMPETITION

Poets are being asked to put pen to paper to celebrate their own North-East hero. There are categories for over 18s and young poets. The over 18 winner will get the chance to attend a week-long writing course at the prestigious Arvon Foundation and the under 18 winner will win poetry workshop sessions for their school and pounds 100 of book tokens.

COUNTY DURHAM

Folkworks Workout Weekend

Where: Darlington Arts Centre

Cost: pounds 65, pounds 52 for concessions

Open to participants aged 16 and above, the 13th workout weekend features informal teaching sessions, a ceilidh and concerts performed by those taking part. Although not suitable for complete beginners, folk music experience is not a requirement.

Children's Halloween Workshops and Spooky Mine Trips

Where: Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum

When: October 25-31

Cost: pounds 2 extra for workshops on top of normal admission price (pounds 5 for adults, pounds 2.50 for children)

An array of masks, lanterns, scary hats and other dark crafts will be emerging from the museum at the end of the month, made by children who fancy doing something different. Fear-filled mine trips are also on offer for those who dare.

TYNE AND WEAR

Piano Workshop

Where: Caedmon Hall, Gateshead Central Library

When: October 20 at 7pm

Cost: pounds 3 on the door

Monthly workshops, which are open to pianists of all abilities, are taken by established concert pianist, Venera Bojkova who publicly tutors two or three participants students per session in all aspects of piano playing.
