Darlington's winning run at the Reynolds Arena came to an end, but at least they stretched their unbeaten run to six games.

After four straight home wins, Mick Tait's youngsters were well short of their best against a determined Southend.

The Shrimpers had lost 13 consecutive away games until drawing at Scunthorpe on Saturday, and they were clearly lifted by ending that losing run.

They dominated the first half, and Darlington were grateful for goalkeeper Michael Price and some wayward finishing.

The Quakers had no-one to match experienced Southend skipper Kevin Maher, who dominated the midfield with his positional play and shrewd passing.

On 16 minutes the keeper scrambled to save a long-range drive from Gower, as Southend attacked relentlessly.

Darlington were restricted to hitting long balls forward for Matt Clarke and Barry Conlon to chase, but there was little to lift the home crowd, except when Conlon drove narrowly wide after the Southend defence failed to deal with Chris Hughes' corner. …
