Player of the week

Virginia K Connor Hughes (left) followed up a game-tying, Scott Stadium-record 53-yard field goal by connecting from 38 yards with 10 seconds to play as the Cavs rallied to a 27-24 victory over Wake Forest. Hughes connected on four field goals in the game.

Game of the week

Clemson at Maryland, Saturday: This one-time ACC marquee matchup carries huge ramifications as the Tigers open a three-game stretch that includes Virginia and N.C. State. Their soft non-conference slate over, the Terps try to rebound from FSU loss.

INSPIRATION: A quote about Tampa Bay Bucs and former FSU QB Brad Johnson hangs in the locker of Virginia QB Matt Schaub, who returned last week from a severely separated shoulder: "This guy is as tough anybody. He gets killed back there and doesn't care."

GROWING: Maryland is pursuing an expansion plan for Byrd Stadium that will added 15,000 seats, including luxury boxes, for a $50 million price tag. School officials are tentatively targeting a 2006 opening.

LAST: That's where North Carolina ranks out of 117 Division I-A programs in total (522 ypg.) and scoring (42.7 ppg.) defense.

FYI: Does the ACC no longer have eyes for Irish? . . . FSU QB Chris Rix moves to third in ACC all-time pass efficiency (145.27). . . . Terps' WR Suter facing knee surgery.

Rant of the week

"Why show Miami and Virginia Tech in the power poll? They are not in the ACC (yet). Guess maybe it makes FSU look better."

"Fifty [wins] in seven years is not a bad little number, but it's not a really big number around here."

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, who is 50-25 lifetime, but only 32-21 in his fifth season with the Tigers.
