HAS THE BBC lost its nerve following the Hutton Inquiry?

This morning Greg Dyke has confirmed that the BBC will not broadcast Michael Crick's allegations against Iain Duncan Smith which were to have been broadcast on Friday's Newsnight. With the Tory leader threatening to sue and Greg Dyke on holiday it was Deputy Director- General Mark Byford who spiked the piece last week.

To the frustration and fury of Newsnight journalists, Dyke, who came back from Crick and Dyke: investigation was axed while BBC boss was away holiday this morning, confirms he will not overrule the original order. "Mark Byford enjoys Greg's full confidence while he is deputising," insists a spokesman.

"That was the decision that was made and Greg is right behind Mark, he has full confidence in his editorial decision making."

This follows claims by senior BBC sources over the weekend that Dyke would not duck a new political row. "If Greg had been there, we would have done it last night," one told the Sunday Telegraph. "You don't want to do anything dangerous while the boss is away."

It seems the boss is now content to hide behind his Michael Crick is said to have worked for five months investigating the financial practices within Iain Duncan Smith's office. He declined to comment on the news this morning.

Amid claims that Crick has threatened not to work for the Beeb again, the corporation issued an olive branch today: "Michael is a tremendous broadcaster. We look forward to continuing a long and happy working relationship."
