Starkey and Lightfoot Take Class Titles

Article excerpt

Mick starkey and Martyn Lightfoot have been confirmed as Teesside's two title winners in the Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship.

Both had been challenging for the overall crown but finished out of the top three in the final table after Yorkshireman Robert Pritchard won one of the tightest championship chases ever.

Starkey, from Seaton Carew, won the class B title in his Fiesta XR2 and finished fourth in the overall table - just four points behind the winner.

A mammoth 66-point gap separated him from class D runner-up Darren Flounders (Fiesta XR), from Hartlepool, who can nevertheless be delighted with only his second season of racing.

Third in class D was Darlington's Terry Wright (Rover 100).

Meanwhile, Lightfoot (Syilva Striker), from Redmarshall, was fifth overall and took top honours in class F.

Mark Campbell, from Yarm, (Lotus Elan) cut back on his racing commitments this term but still ended up with a trophy after finishing second to David Bone in class A2.

Another Darlington driver set to pick up a trophy at the presentation evening is David Cox who was third in class C.
