League leaders Cleadon were involved in the Durham Challenge Cup, and their Cup form against Crook was as equally impressive as their recent league displays.

It took them until nearly half-time to break the deadlock when Mark Johnson beat the Crook goalkeeper.

Right on the interval, Crook missed a penalty but early in the second period levelled from the spot through David Snow.

This spurred on Cleadon and Danny Nixon ended a flowing movement.

Andrew Potts then hit a superb goal when he ran through unchallenged. He unleashed a rising drive to make the score 3-1 and put the game beyond Crook.

Birtley Town, North Shields and Stokesley all took advantage of Cleadon's Cup duty and narrowed the lead at the top. Three goals in each half cemented a convincing 6-2 win for Birtley against Gateshead Reserves.

Craig McManus proved a match winner. After Paul Richardson and Carl Pennington hit the first two goals, McManus notched his first just on the interval. …
