Jonah is honoured

JONAH LOMU, whose career has been curtailed by a rare kidney disorder, will be given a special merit award by his peers four days before the World Cup Final, writes Chris Jones.

The winger was the face of the last two tournaments but was left out of the All Blacks squad this time as he overcomes nephrotic syndrome, which requires dialysis treatment.

International Rugby Players' Association president Tony Dempsey said Lomu would receive the association's discretionary Special Merit Award at a ceremony in Sydney on 18 November.

Guisborough's finest

MEMBERS of Guisborough RFC, who play in Yorkshire Two, will be there at England's opening World Cup match with Georgia in Perth on Sunday, writes Chris Jones.

The game is the culmination of a two-week stay for 22 of the club's players thanks to a Zurich-sponsored competition they won against 3,000 other entrants.

Part of the prize was a session with England coaches Clive Woodward, Andy Robinson and Phil Larder.

Woodward said: "I certainly enjoyed it. It knocked them about a bit, and got a few pints of beer out of their system. They have got a game here in Perth on Saturday night. They are great characters.

"And it is good, for myself, Andy and Phil to go back and do some work at the grassroots level. When you meet those guys you realise rugby is thriving."

Marsh's French test

FRANCE centre Tony Marsh admits playing in a new midfield combination with Yannick Jauzion will be a huge challenge against Fiji on Saturday.

New Zealand-born Marsh, 31, has not played in an international since June 2002, having battled back from cancer and then a calf injury sustained during his rehabilitation.

"Yannick and I haven't played a game together and we haven't done much training together because he's had a thigh injury," said Marsh. …
