Bar Chain Serves Up a Double Opportunity

An investment of more than pounds 2m in two new Newcastle city-centre bars will create about 80 jobs, leisure company Centro said yesterday.

The business at Morpeth in Northumberland is behind ambitious schemes to transform the 1960s recreation of the Royal Arcade in the 55 Degrees North development into an 8,000 sq ft bar, which is hoped to open before Christmas.

It also intends to launch a 10,500 sq ft American-themed bar at The Gate leisure complex.

The new bar at 55 Degrees North will be known as Bar 55 and will feature outdoor drinking under parasols in a heated area.

Meanwhile, the new venue at The Gate is intended to be a "fun bar" with a bucking bronco, rock-and-roll music and with attractions such as a Vegas night.

Centro partner Alan Newton said Bar 55 was being promoted as a fashionable addition to the city centre bars market in Newcastle and would have a 1am licence.
