That frustrating wait at the bus stop not knowing when the next one will turn up could soon become a thing of the past.

Thanks to a hi-tech project being pioneered in the North East, up-to-date timetable information will soon be displayed at selected bus stops on key routes.

Passengers will be told when the next bus is due and information could even be flashed into people's homes or the office via mobile phones and the internet.

Trials with electronic displays have been carried out at the Park Lane interchange in Sunderland and the Ryton bus hub in Gateshead.

Transport officials are now planning to experiment with the scheme at bus stops and the new system is expected to be in operation on some routes in Gateshead and Sunderland by next spring.

The plan is to extend it to new flagship bus routes due to come into operation over the next few years, including the new Quayside transit running along Newcastle and Gateshead quays via the Swing Bridge, and the Centrelink route between Gateshead town centre and the MetroCentre. …
