Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson has strongly urged Portuguese starlet Hugo Viana to take a leaf out of Kieron Dyer's book as he makes his way in the game.

The 20-year-old was handed the central midfield playmaker's role he likes best as Newcastle progressed to the UEFA Cup second round with victory over NAC Breda in Holland last night.

Viana, however, found the going tough as the Magpies, despite holding a 5-0 first-leg lead, were made to work hard for their 1-0 win.

Robson was pleased with what the pounds 8.5 million signing from Sporting Lisbon did on the ball.

But he warned Viana he needs to work harder when he is not in possession to match the efforts of Dyer and fellow youngster Jermaine Jenas, who both impressed at the MyCom Stadium.

Robson said: "He's more content there and confident there and he did OK.

"But he's got to work and put his foot in, he's got to learn sometimes in football many parts of the game are played without the ball. …
