John Oster says Sunderland can afford to bide their time before breaking into the top two automatic promotion slots.

The Black Cats moved up one place to fourth with their 1-0 win against Walsall on Saturday - three points behind leaders Wigan.

Wales international Oster says hitting the top too early can bring added pressures and it is better to let other sides get all the early attention.

He said: "Personally, I don't think we need to be top at this stage in the season, although the gaffer might think differently!

"I think if you are at the top there is maybe a bit more pressure because you are in the limelight and people are waiting for you to slip up.

"I think it is nice to let the others get the attention while we just go about our business and be ready to strike when the time is right."

Marcus Stewart's goal just before half-time gave Sunderland all three points against Walsall, who played the entire second half with 10 men after Chris Baird was sent off for a professional foul on Oster. …
