Moves to give meter readers a new look to protect customers from bogus callers have been backed by a Teesside pensioners' champion.

British Gas has issued high visibility jackets to meter readers to help make them more identifiable when they visit customers' homes.

The fluorescent yellow sleeveless jackets will carry both the British Gas and meter reading contractor's logos.

Meter readers also carry identity cards displaying their photograph and a freephone number for householders wanting to check identities.

Customers can also arrange for the meter reader to use an agreed password to offer added security.

British Gas meter manager Phil Dornan said: "The safety of customers is our top concern and we are determined to do all we can to reassure people that the meter reader at their door is genuine."

Bogus callers often prey on more vulnerable and elderly people, prompting Redcar and Cleveland's older people's champion, Cllr Mike Findley, to back the move. …
