England's historic inaugural Test against Bangladesh was halted after less than 20 minutes play today after torrential rain saturated the outfield at the National Stadium.

Bangladesh had faced only four overs after winning the toss and deciding to bat and had reached one without loss when the storms broke over the ground and sent the players scurrying for the dressing rooms.

It halted a cautious start by both sides with Bangladesh openers Hannan Sarkar and Javed Omar determined not to play any rash shots early on and happy to leave the majority of deliveries from Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison.

The deadlock was finally broken off the 21st delivery of the day when Harmison finally strayed from an accurate line and length and enabled Javed to clip off his legs for a single and claim the first run of the series.

England had earlier named a line-up which included two debutants, Surrey all-rounder Rikki Clarke and Worcestershire off-spinner Gareth Batty both receiving the call-up after impressive displays in the two warm-up matches. …
