A campaign to tackle attacks on firefighters have claimed a major breakthrough - thanks to video cameras fitted to front-line appliances.

Since fire tenders in Middlesbrough, Grangetown and Coulby Newham stations were fitted with the eye-in-the-cab in March, organisers of the scheme say in total, attacks on firefighters have halved over the same period last year.

Cleveland Fire Brigade, supported by Safe in Tees Valley, aims to extend the pilot scheme with cameras being fitted to all appliances and is in consultation with the Fire Brigades' Union (FBU) over the issue.

But the FBU is sceptical about the claims and is awaiting further analysis of them and discussion on the use of cameras.

Lol Craven, the brigade community safety liaison officer, said: "I have had good feedback from both firefighters and other agencies as to projects that may be undertaken, but there is always a problem with funding.

"That is what I will be concentrating on the months ahead. …
