University of North Florida chemistry professor Kunisi S. Venkatasubban recently was honored as the university's distinguished professor of the year during the fall convocation.

"I'm here to teach students and to do research with them, and I think it's more important than the award itself," said Venkatasubban, who lives in the Intracoastal West area near San Pablo Road. "But it's a great honor."

Venkatasubban, often called "Dr. Venkat," specializes in mechanistic organic chemistry, which he described as a way of understanding how organic and biochemical reactions occur and what happens after the reactions.

A goal of the research is to understand reactions in the human body so drugs can be developed to treat ailments such as Alzheimer's disease. Venkatasubban is working with a researcher at the Mayo Clinic to study an enzyme that plays a critical role in nerve impulses.

Venkatasubban has worked at UNF for 22 years.

The UNF Faculty Association votes on the distinguished professorship, given annually to a professor with a record of distinction in teaching, scholarship and service. …
