Fit Is Blamed for Bath Death

A devastated father heard how his wife's sudden death just weeks before Christmas was probably caused by an epileptic fit.

Mum-of three Joanne Patchett was found unconscious in the bath on December 8 last year by her husband Gary, an inquest heard.

Despite attempts by paramedics and doctors to resuscitate her, the 36-year-old did not regain consciousness and died in the University Hospital of North Tees.

The hearing in Middlesbrough yesterday was told by consultant pathologist Jonathan Hoffman that Mrs Patchett had suffered a fit - possibly due to epilepsy, which she may have developed in adulthood.

Cleaning supervisor Mrs Patchett, of Holmside Walk, Stockton, had suffered only one previous fit during a weekend visit to Blackpool back in October 2001.

She had been taken to Blackpool General Hospital and discharged a few hours later.

But her GP Dr Alagappan Ramaswamy said there was no report in her medical records indicating the fit or the visit to hospital. …
