Carol Cantalupo watched her grandson, 8-year-old Bradley Jones, pick a pumpkin off the ground and plop it into a wheelbarrow. Her granddaughter, Allie Cantalupo, 6, ran up and down the pumpkin patch, found another one, and plopped that one in, too.

"This is so pretty here," Carol Cantalupo said as she looked around Ponte Vedra Beach's only pumpkin patch, on the grounds of The Lord of Life Lutheran Church at 276 Roscoe Blvd. N.

"They like to run around," she said of her grandchildren. "This is wonderful."

Cantalupo and her husband, Donald, were some of the pumpkin patch's first customers Friday afternoon after the patch opened at 2 p.m.

This is the fourth year members of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church have run a pumpkin patch -- a fund-raiser for a new church building on the 7 acres they bought five years ago. Volunteers will staff the pumpkin patch weekdays from 2 p.m. to dusk and this weekend from 9 a.m. to dusk. They also will have craft sales, bake sales and a gift basket raffle in the stable.

Floyd Wiggins helped unload bales of hay Friday that added a decorative touch to the grounds. He said he has been a member of the church since it was founded 16 years ago, when it was located in portable buildings on Solana Road.

After buying the Roscoe Boulevard property that used to be a horse ranch, church members held services in the stable for two years until portable buildings were added to the site. Wiggins said church members will get the architectural renderings for the new building this week and they hope to complete it by next year.

Event coordinator Wendy Mowat said many customers tell her they look forward to the pumpkin patch. …
