I agree with Spleen contributor DF, of North Shields (October 22), that pensioners cannot possibly be as impoverished as some are making them out to be - unless they are misusing or not taking up the benefits available to them.

I'm a pensioner aged 80 with my wife aged 78 on the statutory flat rate pension. We are warm, well fed and clothed in a comfortable home and we have money to spend on luxuries such as outings and holidays etc. In fact, we are rather tired of being patronised by some of our grown up children and grandchildren who get to think that we are half-starved, freezing or in want in some other way. Agreed, it wasn't always like today with a Tory Government in power and we may concede that there's still relative poverty about but pensioners dying of cold or starvation - we simply can't believe it.

We concede, however, that we are able bodied and have a large retinue of descendants eager to look after us if we needed anything, so we may be rather featherbedded. …
