Protesters campaigning against the closure of Hartlepool's hospital have been assured the site will not close.

But services currently situated at the town's University Hospital site may be moved in a bid to improve services, health chiefs told a special meeting last night.

The news was revealed at the event in the town's Grand Hotel, where about 100 people gathered to voice their fears about the future of the Holdforth Road hospital.

Health chiefs faced a wave of protest when they revealed a major review of health services across Teesside could mean building a new site and closing both North Tees and Hartlepool hospitals.

Other options include leaving services as they are, or moving departments so one site focuses on emergency and one on planned care.

At last night's meeting, Peter Gill, deputy medical director of North Tees and Hartlepool Trust, said the trust was only suggesting changes to configuration at the three-star site. …
