A good Samaritan was kicked and punched by a gang after he rescued a young woman who was being mugged at a Metro station.

The man, in his 20s, pushed the attackers away from the stricken woman.

She had been knocked to the ground suffering a barrage of blows at Regent's Centre concourse, Gosforth, Newcastle.

The man stepped in as he saw a gang crowd around the distressed and crying woman.

They had already laid into her on the ground and stolen some of her shopping which had fallen from one of the five bags she was carrying on Wednesday night.

Det Sgt Dave Swinburne of Newcastle North police said: "The woman was clearly distressed. She was being slapped while on the ground.

"The man, who does not want to be identified, came across the mugging at 7.30pm near the ticket machines at Regent's Centre Metro station in Gosforth.

"He went to her assistance and was assaulted himself. Although he didn't need hospital treatment, he was injured in the attack. …
