Virus-Hit Liner Heads to Rock

A luxury cruise liner carrying more than 400 passengers struck by a highly contagious stomach virus was heading towards Gibraltar today.

Authorities there are yet to decide whether the P&O liner, which has already been turned away from Greece, will be allowed to dock.

Yesterday lawyers warned that sick passengers aboard the Aurora were ready to claim as much as pounds 6,000 each for ruined holidays.

About 430 passengers on board the liner, carrying nearly 1,800 passengers and more than 800 crew members, have been hit by a stomach virus that has caused passengers to be violently ill.

The total claim against P&O could amount to as much as pounds 2.5 million, according to Clive Garner, partner with Irwin Mitchell Solicitor's International Travel Litigation Group.

Mr Garner said: "We have already received enquiries from several people who wish to take legal action against P&O Cruises in the light of the current outbreak of illness on board the MS Aurora and we expect many more. …
